Given that both the Sword of Erosion and Sword of Corruption techniques are described as being "fired off", are they generally projectiles in the same vein as Mana Slash?
The previous translation always gave me the impression they were more of a type of direct blow.
The writing style in Japanese is an extremely clear indicator towards whose "voice" we're listening to, and honestly the "the apprentice is always the person writing the side guides" was a misinterpretation from the original translation that became the common conception. I'm not here to trash the original translation, and genuinely, conveying the "plain/distal split", something that is really easy in Japanese, is actually pretty hard in English given that the apprentice and WS both use literary Japanese... but there's a lot that isn't conveyed, and that is just plain wrong.
The verb used for both is 放つ, which is almost exclusively used for kind of... ranged attacks, like "to release/unleash/fire/emit". My guess is that while it almost certainly is done by the vector of a physical blow, the important part is the releasing of the mana. Context tells me it's a bit of both.

Yeah, looking back, the role the apprentice has in the side guides was really overstated. Makes it easier to explain how in Side 3 they had no participation at all except as a cameo at the end.
Still, thanks again for taking the time to explain and answer questions. I imagine there's a lot of nuance that is clear in the Japanese text but hard to translate to English, so having both your translation notes and answering question has been really helpful!
