Yeah, a human translator is generally the best bet, though I've found that ChatGPT also tends to be pretty accurate. For example, I've ran this section in it (o4-mini model) and the translation given was:

... just as an obnoxious vent, I was shocked and a little disappointed by how much of the translation for this section on the wiki was just straight-up machine translation. After reading this thread I at least know it wasn't some great act of deception, and because Google Translate is at least by now ~pretty good~ that means that the available content was at least ~pretty accurate~, and heck, some of it is still the most accurate and intuitive way to word the text in English (hence why there are snippets that I have basically left intact). It still should be used as a single tool by a translator and not a replacement for translating, because it does lead to some pretty conspicuous inaccuracies like not recognizing context-sensitive terminology. The TL;DR is that KC-sensei and Will put a lot of effort to craft their world by hand, and I think we need to be sure to put in the same love and care on our end.

Anyway. Preaching over. Because this section and the one after it are really dense with information, I might upload the sections as separate posts for now, just to keep a good pace. As usual, relevant (or at least somewhat interesting, I hope) translation notes will be in their sections. Here we go!

The dragons that inhabit this land can mainly be divided into two categories. The first is those who make their homes amid the ever-lingering, mana-dense clouds of the sacred mountain peaks, living in a form similar to humans and only changing into the forms they bore in the days of the former Mamono Lords to descend the mountain. The second is those who settle down in the caves and Dragei fortress ruins of the Dragonian Territories, seldom seen in the city. Since ancient times, dragons have been referred to as the highest-ranking monsters, and are famous for their strong bodies and high intelligence, as well as their extreme haughtiness.

Some “wild” dragons, fighting against their monstrous instincts that recognize human men as males of the same species and living in the mountains and caves of the Dragonian Territories in order to avoid contact with them, may, due to this infamous pride, look down on humans as “beings far inferior to themselves”. However, in Dragonia, a land that prides itself on “the coexistence of dragons and humans”, nearly all dragons have perceptions regarding humans more in line with “males equal to themselves” or “fellow soldiers providing mutual support”.

Still, there is a degree of caution that dragons recognizing humans as equal beings from the start entails. Like the aforementioned dragons, wyverns are treated as a representative race of Dragonia, and as the dragons that have been mostly commonly ridden by humans and joined forces with them since the days of the former Mamono Lords, they have also become the symbol of the Dragoon Corps. The wyverns that inhabit Dragonia are markedly influenced by the Corps, where humans fly and fight together with their dragon mounts. In other words, just as they have an instinct as monsters to feel attracted to human men, so too do they long to experience flying with a human on their backs; depending on the individual, some may consider it a point of pride.

Compared to dragons, brimming with confidence and, depending on the circumstance, bearing overwhelming auras, wyverns are driven by their desire to give rides more than any feelings of pride or ego. They have a particularly strong interest in humans, and upon spotting a human, regardless of their sex, will actively call out to them and attempt to kindle a friendship. These girls, with their extremely affable dispositions, who love conversing with and aiding humans, often offer to show adventurers who have just arrived in Dragonia around, and in some cases may even attempt to get some upon their backs. Here in Dragonia, where it is impossible for a human to see all the sights on foot, it is highly recommended to travel on the back of a wyvern; however, there are countless cases where in doing so, their innate curiosity will lead them to start touching the human’s body.

In particular, when their riding partner is a human man, taking a very strong interest in the body of the opposite sex that they’re coming into contact with for the first time, they may attempt to innocently fondle the man’s crotch (the point most conspicuously different from their own bodies), take his hand and press it against their chest, or ascertain the way his fingers may feel on their more sensitive areas. Once in a state of arousal, blasting forward heedless of the large obstacles like boulders or large trees that stand in their way– these are the wurms, also called “earth dragons”. If one were to hear of the Dragonia Dragoon Corps, most would probably associate with it the image of dragoons riding on the backs of dragons or wyverns, but half of the successes of the Dragoon Corps here in Dragonia are thanks to the power of wurms.

As one might know, here within the vast Dragonian Territories, abundant nature like mountains, forests, plateaus, and marshes spread as far as the eye can see. Most of it, however, is primeval forest untouched by humans, and it also contains all the dangers of a natural labyrinth. While those who are accompanied by a guide are safe, it’s not at all uncommon for tourists who forgo such planning or adventures seeking a dungeon to wind up imperiled in the Territories. When some unfortunate soul falls into such a predicament, finding them is no simple task even with the help of the Dragonia Dragoon Corps. Downpours and thunder caused by local weather, thick rising fog, and towering trees that grow densely together– all of these forces of nature turn into obstacles, imposing significant limitations on the dragoons’ “aerial searches” and simultaneously robbing those stranded of their physical strength.

In such desperate circumstances, the Corps relies upon and dispatches wurms. The wurms inhabiting Dragonia are extremely sensitive to the signs a human emits, such as sounds and scents. A lost human’s cry for help, their exhausted, panicked breathing, even the smell of a bleeding wound– they can detect a human in crisis from any and all of it. Possessing temperaments gentle enough to be considered simple and overflowing with motherly love, many wurms work in establishments such as taverns and inns with relaxed atmospheres that utilize natural caves, easing the weariness of travel. However, upon sensing that a human is in danger, their beloved “families” take precedence over anything else and, when set upon rescuing a victim, they rampage through the earth in a direct line regardless of all obstacles to carry the operation out.

In Dragonia, there are many human men who were charmed by, and ended up falling in love with, the devoted and loving image of the wurms who rushed to their aid after an emergency in the Dragonian Territories and nursed them back to health. So, too, are there plenty of human women who admire the wurms’ selfless, fervent dedication to rescue operations and hope to be assigned to the Dragoon Corps Ranger Unit, whose main duties are nature conservation and search and rescue.

“Y’know, I always thought my life didn’t mean a damned thing… and really, it didn’t. I was born in the slums– all I could remember from the time I was grown enough to even think about it was thievery n’ violence. I made my way by lyin’ and cheatin’ today just to see tomorrow. Heard that there was some dragon treasure out there in the forest and set out, thinkin’ I’d finally turn my luck around, but all I got for gettin’ as lost as I’ve ever been was a one-way trip down a cliff.

In the end, I just start screamin’. About how all I wanted was just to be happy, like every other poor sod wants, just for once, how I didn’t give a damn if the one who could give that to me was a god, or the Mamono Lord, or whoever the hell else. Y’know, I’m the one layin’ there half-dead and sobbin’ like a baby, but she looked like she was about to cry more than I was. Everything I’d heard up ‘til that moment about monsters was that they were horrifying creatures, but lookin’ at her right then, she looked just like a light of salvation.

Wonderland Dragon Exchange Students1

Dragonia, as part of the empire’s diplomatic efforts, invites dragons from far-off mamono realm nations well-versed in their own lands as “dragon exchange students”, striving to enhance mutual understanding and advancement for both parties. Jabberwocks are the dragon race endemic to “Wonderland”, invited as its representative dragon exchange students.

Originally found only in Wonderland, there are no wild specimens of jabberwock in the Dragonian Territories; in the Empire, however, standing out remarkably with their distinctive, enchantingly curved horns and provocatively exposed skin, they are quite easy to spot. There are many individual dragons among those in Dragonia who approve of humans, but at the same time, due to their draconic pride as “the mighty who overwhelm all others”, when they finally become aware of another as the opposite sex, the idea of laying bare their own feelings as a female leaves them bewildered and ashamed. Invariably, this leads to their way of interacting with human men being stiff and clumsy.

And yet, while still dragons themselves, and therefore building upon the very same feelings of shame, jabberwocks take immense pride as “the lewdest beings who overwhelm all others”. Because they have absolute confidence in their obscene behavior towards human men, their ways of dealing with human men far outpace Dragonia’s dragons; many individuals possess an assertiveness to rival or even surpass wyverns, and most have the generous motherly bearing of a wurm.

For this reason, the girls who are invited as dragon exchange students are often assigned to work at the Dragonia Tourism Bureau, teaching novice dragons who find themselves turning into blushing maidens when it comes to guiding men around the way to approach them. Much in this way, married jabberwocks and their husbands are invited from Wonderland to the Dragoon Corps as special instructors, where the dragoons, seeking to deepen their bonds with their dragon mounts, witness the couples perform demonstrations of a proper marital relationship so intense and indecent that they turn their faces away without realizing it.

Furthermore, jabberwocks, who are entrusted with the role of blocking adventurers’ paths as “trials” in Wonderland, even make appearances as opponents in the Dragoon Corps entrance exam or in the arena. When confronting a jabberwock, what is being put to the test for the human in question is not the simple strength of their arm, but the depth of their love for dragons. Just as with dragons, should a man understand and appreciate their affection towards humans, and express his heartfelt love of dragonkind through his words and deeds, both the man himself and the jabberwock will recognize the challenger as a male worthy of satisfying a dragon.

“Tea parties”, held by the jabberwock couples who visit this land and have their love solidified by putting the man’s love of dragons to the test, making use of Wonderlandian sweets and magic items in order to make the love between man and dragon ever more lewd, have become something of an underground craze here in Dragonia.

1: PUNS! Did you guys know I love puns? Because I do. 竜, the kanji for "dragon" that is used as the catch-all for the dragon family of monsters, is also pronounced "ryuu" in its on'yomi, or Chinese pronunciation, which is the pronunciation most typically used for compounds (stick a pin in this because I'll bring it up again real soon). 留学生, "ryuugakusei", means "exchange student", typically one from abroad who is there not as a permanent transfer... AKA a foreign exchange student! 留 and 竜 are pronounced the same way!

I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to express this wordplay in English, but at the end of the day I just went with "dragon exchange student" because it was the least tortured and because "dragon" and "foreign" are like... kinda-sorta slant rhymes. A bit. The one I was the most proud of was "scalorship student", but the world wasn't ready for that.

Healing Goddesses of Water

A race of dragons with power so mighty as to control the weather and bring rain, even revered as “water goddesses” in the “Zipangu Region” far to the east– these are the ryuu. A huge hot spring town called “Ryuusen Village” sprawls across the eastern reaches of Dragonia, where it is known as one of the most famous tourist destinations in Dragonia, and many ryuu call it home. A large portion of them run hot spring resorts there.

They love the sight of humans easing their weariness and feeling good in their hot springs, and depending on the time and circumstances may even come to men’s sides during their baths, offering them sake made from the sacred waters that they themselves have brought forth and diligently washing their backs. The origins of why a race native to the Zipangu region live in a distant land such as this in such large numbers date to a time as far back as that of Dragonia’s founding. When the empire was new, when Her Majesty the queen had only just sworn the oath of human and dragon coexistence and bequeathed it the new name of Dragonia, the scars of the Dragei Revolution still ran deep within the Empire. A particularly serious casualty was the land set ablaze by the privileged class of the Voli when they fled Dragei to obscure themselves from the dragons: the scorching “Eastern Wastes”.

During the time when the dragons and humans worked together to rebuild the empire despite such painful scars lingering, a lone ryuu from Zipangu arrived. Summoning rain and dampening the scorched earth, and using her awesome power to unearth the source of a hot spring, the ryuu instantly transformed the region into the Ryuusen Village, a massive hot springs district where dragons and humans alike could rest their weary bodies. The ryuu, who made great efforts to heal both dragons and humans and was idolized as “Lady Tatsuizumi”1, would eventually mate with a man and bear many daughters– many ryuu. That is to say, the ryuu living in Ryuusen Village today are the daughters of Lady Tatsuizumi. Bearing a maternal presence inherited from their mother, these “ideal hostesses2” of Ryuusen Village seek to envelop the hearts of others as warmly as the waters of a hot spring. When a single man comes for a night at their inn bearing a broken heart, it seems that they will very often share a bed with him to try to heal his body and spirit.

In this way, here in Dragonia, the ryuu’s serenity is equal to the wurm’s, but one must never forget that they are still dragons.

No matter how agreeable they may be, deep in their hearts, they have pride as the “water goddess” daughters of Lady Tatsuizumi. They are ordinarily not the sort of girls to get violent, but if one happens to glimpse the sight of one bathing, this is not the case. To the ryuu, for another to see their bare bodies is tantamount to a violation of their dignity as water goddesses, and what’s more, something permissible only for their own beloved husbands. If by some mistake a man were to encounter them while bathing, the ryuu would be entirely driven by her own rage and insatiable lust. Her roiling emotions will never calm until she has claimed the chastity of the man who humiliated her, and made him her husband.

1: This founding mother is called "Lady Ryuusen" in the original (machine) translation. Naturally, there is no furigana telling us how to read it, so we can't know for sure the "right way". I, however, have written it as "Tatsuizumi", and here's why:

• I wanted to avoid any and all ambiguity with the name of the village itself, due to the fact that in Japanese, the village is 竜泉郷, written with 竜 (our catch-all dragon kanji), and the name of the character is 龍泉, written with 龍, which is also the specific kanji used for this specific species of dragon. A Japanese reader would be able to immediately tell them apart as different, so we should be able to do this in English too.

• Let's get back to what I mentioned before about the 'Chinese pronunciations' of kanji- "ryuusen" would also be the on'yomi of 龍泉. The kun'yomi (or "Japanese pronunciation") would be "Tatsuizumi". On'yomi is, as I mentioned before, the standard reading for compounds, but, and this is important, not so much for names. For a real-world example, read as a noun, 高原 would be pronounced as "kougen", and refers to plateaus. Read as a proper noun, AKA a name, 高原 would be pronounced most typically as "Takahara". Yeah, Japanese is a tricky language. Also there's apparently a sake brewery called Tatsuizumi! Cool!

I am giving you all of this information to back up my decisions because I am an autist and you'll just have to deal with that.
2: "Hostess" is a pretty meh translation for 女将, which refers very specifically to the female proprietresses of traditional Japanese establishments, but it's what I went with because it's what sounds the least clunky in English, even if I'm sacrificing that quintessential "this is a very Japanese thing" that 女将 implies. In the notes it goes.

Unfulfilled Souls
Dragon Zombie

There are times when especially proud dragons may end their lives as solitary beings, never having mated with a human man. In these circumstances, mamono mana responds in kind to that most deeply-held lingering regret and amasses, causing them to come to life once more as dragon zombies.

The pride they possessed as dragons, along with their reason, has melted away in exchange for a body whose decay has been halted by mana. All that remains within them are the lingering attachments and regrets that they never mated with a human man, and thus, an avaricious desire to breed with a man who crosses their path and have children. Dragon zombies are always in heat, and once they catch sight of a human man, they heed their instincts and attack him in an attempt to have sex. Since their reason has rotted away, their intelligence is inferior to the time where they were once dragons, but once one is captured by a dragon zombie, there is no escape from their sheer brute strength.

Dragon zombies represent substantial danger to human men, but in Dragonia, the abundance of opportunities to mate with a human makes it so that dragons passing away alone is quite uncommon. In turn, witnessing such a peril within the Empire is exceptionally rare. But the same cannot be said of the Dragon’s Graveyard, located on the outskirts of the Dragonian Territories. It is where the remains of the dragons who fell victim to harsh training and military campaigns during the age of the Dragei Empire are buried. The Graveyard is constantly overflowing with the enduring sorrows and attachments of the dragons from that time who longed to build a good relationship with humans, and, due to the tremendous amounts of mana that were drawn to those feelings of resentment, all of the buried dragons were resurrected as dragon zombies.

These dragon zombies still roam the dark, mana-thick haze of the Dragon’s Graveyard to this day, and if a human were to step foot inside, he would end up as the recipient of their long-held lusts. Those captured by a dragon zombie, as a whole, will never see the outside world again. That being said, the physical affection of these monsters, within whom lingering attachment to humanity and grief swirl together, is on one hand a greedy devouring of the man’s body, on the other an admirable thing where they are devoted to serving the man in any way. If the captured man is able to fill the sad void that fuels her actions with his own fuckrod1, little by little, the dragon zombies will start to regain their powers of reason, and hearken to the man’s words.

Within the Dragonia Empire, fairy tales are often told about human men who conquer the ancient sorrow lurking in the hearts of dragon zombies, and build with them bright and happy homes. In actuality, there are cases where humans who have mated with dragon zombies in the Dragon’s Graveyard return to the Empire to live together after marrying them. These men, true saviors of dragons, are lauded as “dragon killers”2 by the people of Dragonia, and are treated similarly to heroes.

Additionally, on rare occasions, a hatchling3 who lost their life during the Dragei era will be resurrected as a dragon zombie with a childlike form, and out of curiosity, will leave the Dragon’s Graveyard and wander into the city of Dragonia. While these young dragon zombies are still lustful, they do not actually pose much threat to a human. If you ever find yourself meeting a little lost dragon zombie, one option available to you is to try to treat them with love, holding no fear in your heart and understanding their underlying loneliness and heart that longs for humans.

Translation Notes:
1: I know what you may be thinking- "wow, that sounds really vulgar in something that so far has had a very polite, professional voice! What a weird choice!" And that's exactly what I thought when I read 肉棒 in the original! 肉棒, literally "meat-rod", is a vulgar euphemism for the male genitalia. "Fuckrod" (or something similarly "dirty-sounding" like "cock") really is the best way to translate it, I promise I'm not pulling it out of nowhere. The original just saying "penis" doesn't capture the vibe lmao
2: Yep, this is literally ドラゴンキラー ("dragon killer", in English) in the original, so it was like that for a reason. This is almost certainly another bit of punning, because キラー can have a dual meaning, just like "lady-killer" in English. Another example specific to Japanese is マダムキラー ("madam killer"), which refers to a charming dude who specifically goes for older women; a cougar-hunter, if you will. So the double meaning that I think is happening here is both "MGE-ified version of 'slaying', meaning that the threat is gone" and "man who is considered popular and charming by dragons".
3: I went with "hatchling" because the original is 幼竜, another ~novel kanji compound~! Plus I wanted to avoid ambiguity. "Young" for a human can apply to teenagers, and "young" for a dragon could be like, 50. 幼 very specifically implies "very young", and in compounds for animals, refers to juvenile stages (幼虫, for instance, refers to insect larvae). Let there be no doubt in your heart for even an instant that these are dragon lolis.

Classified as monsters within the lizard family, lizardmen and salamanders are known as the “star performers”, leaving behind incredible legacies in the annual Grand Tournament of Dragonia.

During times of peace, they often refine their swordsmanship at the Dragoon Corps training grounds, which is open for use to those of the Dragonian Territories, or at the ruins of ancient battlefields; it’s not uncommon for them to challenge skilled adventurers visiting the area to a battle. The best chance to catch sight of them is, as one might expect, during the period in which the Grand Tournament of Dragonia is being held. When that time comes, they begin showing up in weapon shops and taverns within the Empire, looking for human men to participate in the Grand Tournament with them, and they’ll strike up a conversation with warriors they find promising.

Simply being recognized and approached by these high-caliber swordswomen is a great honor in and of itself, and the yearly sight of cocksure warriors huddled together in taverns, nervously drinking while they wait to be invited has become a staple of Tournament season here in Dragonia. The men these girls strike up conversation with tend to be warriors already possessing a high degree of skill, but at times, the monsters of the lizard family may also come up to a greenhorn adventurer as if picking out a weapon that suits them at a weapons shop.

The lizard family monsters of Dragonia also especially excel at teaching the art of the sword– by training a rookie as if he was a seasoned fighter during the short amount of time leading up to the Grand Tournament, they can make him into a worthy partner. If they were unable to get the results they were hoping for in the Grand Tournament, lizard family monsters will conclude that it was due to a lack of mutual understanding between them, and in order to get to know each other more deeply, will start to actively desire sex. It’s becoming common in Dragonia for these sorts of duos, after making love countless times and eventually becoming husband and wife, to achieve brilliant results in the following year’s Grand Tournament.

The students of their training are not limited to humans, either. The majority of the dragons serving in the Dragonia Dragoon Corps were originally unaccustomed to human weaponry, and therefore their skills were rather poor. In order for these dragons to at times fight as knights themselves alongside the men, the Corps will call upon lizardmen and salamanders as instructors, learning from their superior swordplay and deep knowledge of the weapons used by humans. One of the strengths of the Dragonia Dragoon Corps is that they’ve learned their school of combat directly from many husband-wife duos from the lizard family that have been invited from other mamono realm nations as instructors; it is all because of this highly practical daily training that, when faced with a variety of external threats, they are able to quickly and flexibly adapt to the situation and respond in kind.

1: Do you get there very often? Oh, what am I saying- of course you don't. 雲上 is how it's written in Japanese, or "above the clouds", but this sounded less clunky. Also a reference to a place called "Dragonsreach" just really tickled my brain but good.

It still should be used as a single tool by a translator and not a replacement for translating, because it does lead to some pretty conspicuous inaccuracies like not recognizing context-sensitive terminology. The TL;DR is that KC-sensei and Will put a lot of effort to craft their world by hand, and I think we need to be sure to put in the same love and care on our end.

I totally agree. I'm only rely on machine translation because translation of the World Guide Side books (especially Dragonia, later books get better to some degree) is pretty bad, and I lack enough skill for proper transkation.

I do have a question, though. The section on Dragon Zombies says they are less intelligent than normal dragons, but their Making Of seems to say they keep all their skills and intellect from life.

Although its movements have become somewhat sluggish, it has instead gained inexhaustible stamina, and its fiery breath has transformed into a corrupting breath that turns humans into undead, making it a monster with terrifying power even on its own, much like a dragon.

Its reasoning has melted away, and its thoughts have become simple, based on reproductive instincts. However, it hasn't lost intelligence or knowledge. In fact, the high intelligence and the knowledge accumulated over a long lifespan before its death are sometimes used directly to attack men and produce offspring.
